Thandi, the lone survivor of three rhinos targeted by poachers on the night of March 2, 2012 in Kariega Game Reserve, was our inspiration for World Rhino Day, which happened on September 22. We contacted Kariega and offered to assist by generating funds for their Save the Rhino Foundation. To raise funds, we held a raffle for our parents and learners, which involved selling tickets. First ever Minecraft tournament a huge success

After tough building battles which saw 29 teams going head-to-head, the winners of the first-ever Curro Cup Minecraft tournament have been announced. The U12 category was won by the Curro Wolves from Curro Durbanville, while the Village Raiders from Curro Krugersdorp managed to outbuild all the competition in the U14 category. The two teams walk away with Curro Cup Minecraft floating trophies as well as pins for their school blazers.

Curro Aurora team wins first-ever Minecraft league

Microsoft Minecraft’s educational edition has been part of the curriculum at many Curro schools, as it allows for the development of skills such as collaboration, strategic thinking, and decision-making. So, when lockdown struck and Curro Sport announced the world’s first school-level Minecraft e-sport league, the response from learners and teachers was overwhelming. 

Curro Waterfall learners take flight in drone flying competition

To end the second term on a (literal) high point, Curro Waterfall hosted a drone-flying competition in which Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners showcased what they learned so far during the year. Learners maintained social distancing by connecting to Wi-Fi with their smartphones, and were assessed on their ability to work collaboratively and solve problems while maneuvering their drones through an obstacle course.

Curro schools couldn’t play sport during lockdown, so they began competitive Minecraft

During the height of lockdown, students at the various schools of private education provider Curro Holdings couldn’t get together to play traditional sports such as rugby hockey or cricket. So the students turned to super-popular videogame Minecraft instead.

Layla Arrison is a woman who has many ‘firsts’ notched on her belt. She was part of Curro Hermanus’s first matric class and was the captain of Stellenbosch University's first all-female 7s rugby team.

Little Big Mouth – Curro Aurora’s Brady-Rae Brophy going for the stars

Brady Hofmeyr, a student at Curro Aurora, Randburg, is the child star of the new romantic comedy, Little Big Mouth, on Netflix. Brady acts as the 9 year old Luke, who lives with his single mom and her dad, his oupa, and whose lives pretty much revolve around Luke.
