Kultura Festival: Celebrating Durbanville's rich cultural diversity

Durbanville, a town steeped in history and surrounded by picturesque landscapes, is set to host its inaugural cultural celebration – the Kultura Festival. This vibrant event, which is scheduled from 20 to 27 June, promises a week-long immersion into the arts, music, and local traditions, all within the grounds of Curro Durbanville High School.

A community united through culture

Curro Durbanville has long been recognised for its commitment to cultural excellence. Hosting the Kultura Festival is a natural progression in its mission to serve as a cultural hub for the northern suburbs. High School Head Isa Swanepoel envisions the festival as a means to unite the community through shared experiences in culture, music, and language. She remarks, 'There is nothing that brings a community as close as culture, music, and language. These things speak directly to the heart.'

An exciting line-up of events

The Kultura Festival boasts a carefully curated programme designed to cater to diverse tastes:

  • Theatre and comedy: Actress Sandra Prinsloo will perform in the acclaimed war drama Kamphoer. Comedians Marion Holm, Marc Lottering, and Barry Hilton are set to deliver evenings filled with laughter.
  • Music performances: The Cape Town Junior Philharmonic Orchestra will collaborate with renowned soprano Zanne Stapelberg, while rapper Early B and DJ Justin Vega promise energetic performances to get audiences moving.
  • Competitions: High school learners can showcase their talents in two major contests:
    • The Band Battle: Open to high school bands across the Western Cape, with Francois van Coke as the main judge. The competition culminates in a performance by Francois and his band.
    • Nou Praat Jy! public speaking competition: A national-level contest focusing on the theme Afrikaans – 'n taal van kleure en klank, encouraging eloquence and cultural appreciation among learners.

Both competitions offer substantial cash prizes, with entries closing on 24 April. For more details and entry forms, visit the Curro Durbanville High School website or follow their updates on Facebook and Instagram.

A toast to local wineries

The Kultura Wine Festival will take place from 20 to 22 June. Local estates such as Nitida, Maastricht, Canto, Meerendal, Klein Roosboom, and Groot Phesantekraal will offer wine tastings, allowing festivalgoers to savour the region's finest vintages between events.

Join the celebration

Riaan Stroebel, Executive Head of Curro Durbanville, extends a heartfelt invitation to the community: 'The Kultura Festival is history in the making, and we can't wait to experience it with you!'
