Zanri Schoeman – conservationist, lecturer, PhD student and proud Curro Langebaan alumna.

The day that Curro Langebaan first opened its doors was Zanri Schoeman’s first day as a Curro learner. This is where it all began and where she became equipped for the demands of university life. Today Zanri is a part-time lecturer at Nelson Mandela University, where she is also studying towards her PhD. ‘Curro Langebaan, especially the syllabus and its standards, without a doubt prepared me for what was to come. Therefore, I am beyond grateful to my parents for giving me the opportunity to attend this school,’ says Zanri.

After matriculating in 2012 Zanri went on to study nature conservation at the Nelson Mandela University, the same university where she is currently employed. ‘Throughout my years of studying I have always dedicated my time to seabird rehabilitation, and in return I got the greatest gift – an ever-growing passion.’ With her PhD Zanri aims to answer questions that will assist in the conservation of two endangered seabird species – the African penguin and the Cape gannet. ‘My study is focused on the effects of the overlap of fisheries and foraging seabirds to determine how best to manage the pelagic fishery in South Africa.’

Zanri has first-hand experience in working with many malnourished seabirds. She quotes Mr André Pollard, former Executive Head of Curro Langebaan, and says ‘It isn’t over until it is over’. With her study she hopes to turn the odds in these seabirds’ favour. We look forward to positive results!

Between studying and lecturing, Zanri also finds time to work with students with learning barriers. ‘What I like about most about working with these students, are the lessons I learn from them. I am a strong believer that I am blessed to be a blessing as it is certainly more rewarding to give than to receive.’
