Wilgies dominate at 2025 Waterstone Super Cup

Four squads. One tournament. Unmatched commitment on the pitch. Curro Wilgeheuwel learners made their mark at the 2025 Waterstone Super Cup in Johannesburg, with standout performances from all teams – especially the U19 and U13 girls who brought home championship honours.

U19 girls secure third Super Cup title

The U19 girls’ team delivered a commanding campaign, securing their third title at the Waterstone Super Cup. Over three days, they displayed control, coordination, and sharp attacking play – cementing their place as one of the top school football squads in Gauteng.

U13 girls go undefeated

The U13 girls’ team also impressed with an unbeaten run through the tournament. From strong defensive setups to precise passing and confident finishes, the squad showed both technical maturity and the spark of rising talent. Their performance signals a promising future for girls’ football at the school.

Grit and resilience from the boys’ teams

The U19 boys battled to a narrow defeat in the final, claiming second place after a close, hard-fought match. Their composure under pressure and strong tactical awareness stood out throughout the competition.

The U13 boys made valuable contributions of their own, putting in consistent performances and gaining experience in each fixture. Their showing supports the school's long-term development focus and lays the groundwork for future success.

A world-class football environment

The tournament was hosted at Waterstone College in Kibler Park, Johannesburg, from 28 to 30 June. The school’s FIFA-grade pitch – used by Mexico’s national team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup – set the stage for matches that featured more than 850 players from 17 schools across Gauteng.

The event’s organisers, including Waterstone’s Executive Head JC Engelbrecht and Technical Director Gavin Andrew, highlighted the tournament’s dual goal: building skill and strengthening values like discipline and collaboration through sport.

Strong teams, stronger community

Curro Wilgeheuwel’s results reflect a thriving football culture supported by committed coaches and an engaged community. Players benefited from expert guidance from Marice Botha, Head of Sport: Primary School, and Johannes Manoko, Head of Sport: High School.

The school’s success was captured and shared by the media team, and energised by the backing of parents, staff and supporters. It was a weekend that showed the value of teamwork on and off the field.

Congratulations to all Wilgies who took part. The 2025 Waterstone Super Cup was a celebration of football, as well as strength, strategy and the spirit behind every great game.
