Waterstone College’s Maia Rahl elected Junior Mayor of Johannesburg

Maia Rahl has stepped into one of Johannesburg’s most visible youth leadership roles after being elected Junior Mayor of the Johannesburg Junior Council.

The position places her at the centre of a youth structure linked to the City of Johannesburg, where learners represent their peers and lead initiatives across the city.

Leading youth voices in Johannesburg

The Junior Council brings together learners from schools across Johannesburg to engage with civic issues and community projects. Members take on roles that mirror a municipal council, including Junior Mayor, Speaker and councillors.

As Junior Mayor, Maia will lead council activities, chair meetings and represent young people in engagements with city leadership and public platforms.

A leadership role shaped over time

Maia’s appointment follows several years of involvement in leadership structures at Waterstone College.

Reflecting on her development, the school said Maia ‘has developed significantly through the leadership programme, gaining valuable experience in various leadership roles over the years’. They added that she has grown into ‘a confident, articulate young woman who is passionate about making a meaningful difference’.

Her involvement began in Grade 8, where she entered the school’s leadership programme and took on responsibilities that built experience over time.

Forum for civic engagement

The Johannesburg Junior Council provides a space for learners to raise issues affecting young people, contribute ideas and take part in community-focused work.

‘(It) is a platform that empowers young leaders to voice their ideas, participate in community projects and influence positive change within the city. It provides an opportunity for youth to develop leadership skills, collaborate with peers and contribute to shaping the future of Johannesburg through various initiatives and programs dedicated to making a meaningful impact in their communities,’ the school added.
