Hannah Delpaul’s Rise to the International Stage
20 September 2024Curro Nelspruit’s Grade 11 learner, Hannah Delpaul, continues to shine in the world of dance, building on her years of commitment. In September she competed at the DTMA South African Nationals, held at the prestigious Marcellus Theatre at Emperors Palace, where her performances earned her significant accolades, including South African National Colours.

Preparation and dedication
Hannah’s preparation for the DTMA Nationals was intense, involving a rigorous training regime. ‘I spend many hours working hard every week, with my training typically involving a combination of intensive physical training, technique classes, and vigorous rehearsals,’ she explained. This dedication to refining her skills is evident in her results – Hannah placed 1st in her Jazz Solo with a score of 92%, 2nd in her Contemporary Solo scoring 91.6%, and 2nd in her Lyrical Solo with another impressive 92%. Her efforts earned her the titles of Overall National Senior Jazz and Contemporary Winner for 2024.
Growth and achievement
Hannah’s dance journey began at the age of two, starting with International Cecchetti Ballet training, through which she completed multiple exams and solo competitions. She later transitioned to the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet and the Association of International Dance (AIDT), mastering various styles such as Tap, Modern, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Jazz, completing a total of 15 exams, including major levels. ‘The opportunity to develop in so many styles has been invaluable in shaping me as a versatile dancer,’ she said.

Opportunity
Being selected as part of the Elite DTMA Squad to represent South Africa internationally in February 2025 is a significant milestone for Hannah. ‘Each country that attends an international competition brings its best dancers. Representing South Africa is an incredible opportunity, and dancing on an international stage opens many doors for my future,’ she expressed. For Hannah, dance is a universal language: ‘It speaks directly to your heart without needing any specific language.’
Inspiration
Hannah’s success has extended beyond personal achievements; she now teaches solo dances to her own students, some of whom attend Curro Nelspruit. ‘Seeing my students grow in their skills and confidence is immensely rewarding,’ she shared. Her impact on the dance community is already evident, as she has been named ‘Dancer of the Year’ at Curro Nelspruit every year since Grade 8.
Aspirations
Looking ahead, Hannah is eager to further her dance career. She has applied to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where she hopes to study Fine Arts. ‘I see a successful future for myself in Fine Arts teaching across the globe,’ she concluded.
