Former Courtney House International learner Olwanda Saphokazi Majozi has published two poems in the African literary magazine The Kalahari Review, marking another milestone in her growing writing career.

Her poems, ‘My Father Tells a Story’ and ‘Ode to Natal’, appeared in the publication’s poetry section in January 2026, bringing her voice to a continental audience through a platform that showcases African writing.

Poetry exploring identity and memory

The Kalahari Review introduces Olwanda as ‘a South African poet and student whose work focuses on identity, womanhood, and the search for a sense of belonging’.

Her poems reflect on themes of family, landscape and personal history. ‘My Father Tells a Story’ explores memory and the influence of family through reflective imagery. ‘Ode to Natal’ draws on places along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, weaving together language, landscape and belonging.

One line from the poem captures its reflective tone: ‘An equation is, in all the ways that matter, a prayer.’

The publication forms part of a network of African literary platforms that present poetry, fiction and nonfiction from writers across the continent, offering space for both emerging and established voices.

From Cambridge honours to literary publication

Olwanda’s writing achievements build on her academic success during her time at Courtney House International.

‘During her time with us, she excelled academically , most notably achieving an outstanding 94% for AS English Language, earning her a Top in the World placement by Cambridge,’ the school said.

That result placed her sixth globally and led to her receiving recognition at the Cambridge Awards Ceremony.

Olwanda’s poetry has previously appeared in the South African literary publication Ons Klyntji Zine, indicating an expanding presence in contemporary African literature.

The school concluded, ‘Her creative talent has captured the attention of several publishing houses, who have invited her to contribute to their upcoming anthologies.’
