Aleah Nel of Curro Vanderbijlpark wins U9 60m, takes 80m silver

Curro Vanderbijlpark Grade 4 learner, Aleah Nel, sprinted to first place in the U9 60m final and secured second in the 80m at the February 2026 Curro Podium athletics event, adding her name to a growing list of primary school standouts across the Curro network.

Her performance places her among the young athletes competing in the Curro Podium series, a national school athletics programme hosted by Curro Sport that culminates annually in the Curro Podium Grand Finale at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane.

Speed on the Podium stage

Aleah’s results came against strong regional competition in her age group.

The Curro Podium series includes regional legs across the country, creating repeated competitive opportunities before the national finale. In 2026, the Grand Finale drew more than 1,500 athletes from around 45 schools across eight provinces, confirming its position as one of the largest school athletics platforms in South Africa.

Multi-sport learner with district goals ahead

Aleah balances athletics with netball and horseriding, reflecting a multi-sport approach encouraged at Curro Vanderbijlpark. She also competed in cross-country during Grade 2, building endurance that now supports her sprint development.

‘Aleah is a girl who loves life, always ready for any challenge,’ the school added.

Her next target is the Sedibeng West D8 Championships, where she will compete in the 600m event as part of the broader district athletics calendar. District events serve as qualifying platforms for higher regional and provincial meets.

The school also acknowledged the contribution of Curro Vanderbijlpark’s Mbuyiseni Khumalo and Junior Martin for their support in class and on the training field.
