Curro Parkdene learner excels in Provincial EMS Olympiad

Grade 9 learner Nicolene Palesa Mudyiwa from Curro Parkdene has achieved outstanding success in the Gauteng Provincial Economic Management Sciences (EMS) Olympiad. Representing the Ekurhuleni South District, she secured a top-three placement among independent schools in the province after representing the Ekurhuleni South District. This impressive result speaks volumes of her critical-thinking skills and enthusiasm for commerce.

From district to provincial success

Nicolene’s journey began at the Olympiad (hosted by the Gauteng Department of Education) at Curro Parkdene in September. The event featured nine learners from various schools competing in written rounds that tested financial literacy, business management, and economic understanding. Nicolene distinguished herself as the only Grade 9 learner to progress to the provincial finals.

A celebration of achievement

Her performance earned her a place at the provincial awards ceremony held at South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) headquarters in Sandton. The ceremony, presented in collaboration with SAICA and the Gauteng Department of Education, recognised learners for academic excellence and highlighted the role of EMS in shaping South Africa’s future business leaders. Nicolene expressed gratitude for the experience, saying that the competition strengthened her confidence and inspired her to pursue further studies in economics.

Guided by dedicated mentorship

She also credited her success to the support of her teacher, Duduzile Mnguni. ‘I am honoured to have participated in the EMS Olympiad,’ Nicolene said. ‘I would like to thank my EMS teacher, Ms Mnguni, for her encouragement and guidance throughout this journey.’

Subject advisor Thabang Letlotlo from the Gauteng Department of Education praised participants, noting that EMS is among the more challenging subjects in the school curriculum and that learners performed exceptionally under pressure.
