Curro Mossel Bay’s Meya adds George Music Society honours to Curro Create success

Recognition for Meya Cordewener has come from two different music stages: a regional competition in George and a national Curro Create platform.

The Curro Mossel Bay learner received multiple awards at the recent George Music Society’s Young Musicians Competition. She was named First Senior Winner, received the Bushakevitz Trophy for Best Senior String Instrumentalist, and was awarded the Martha Mertens Trophy for Music Excellence.

The results add external recognition to a season in which Meya also received a Kryptonite Award at the Curro Create National Competition for her performance in Play It! Strings: Cello and Violin.

Regional recognition in George

The George Music Society’s Young Musicians Competition placed Meya in front of adjudicators beyond the school environment, where performance quality, technical control and musical interpretation all carry weight.

Her three awards point to strength across more than one area. The First Senior Winner result recognised her overall performance in the senior section, while the Bushakevitz Trophy identified her as the Best Senior String Instrumentalist. The Martha Mertens Trophy for Music Excellence added further recognition for her talents.

Curro Mossel Bay described the results as recognition of ‘technical excellence but also musicality, artistry, and performance quality’.

Kryptonite standard at Curro Create

The Kryptonite Award is the highest accolade awarded at Curro Create and applies to performances scoring between 95% and 100%. That places Meya’s performance in the top Curro Create band for the category.

Together, the George Music Society awards and Curro Create recognition show consistency across different performance contexts. They also point to a young musician developing across cello and violin, with results that recognise both technical ability and expressive performance.
