Matrics in Antarctica

Three Curro learners have advanced to the Top 10 of the esteemed ‘Matrics in Antarctica’ competition, an initiative founded by explorer Riaan Manser. This programme offers five South African matriculants a unique opportunity to explore Antarctica, focusing on sustainability and conservation. Read more!

 

Curro's environmental champions

  • L’chelle Bester (Curro Hillcrest): A tech enthusiast, L’chelle is developing an app to help peers log community service hours, highlighting the tangible impact of their efforts. She also envisions creating a beach-cleaning robot to tackle microplastic pollution.

 

 

  • Unathi Kiam Ncube (Curro Heritage House): Unathi leads recycling initiatives and community projects aimed at promoting environmental awareness, as well as being an active member of the school's eco-club. He’s determined to create a greener, healthier planet for future generations.

 

 

  • Riamarie Visagie (Windhoek Gymnasium): Riamarie reduces textile waste and supports those in need by donating excess uniforms. This is done through a family-run second-hand school uniform shop.

 

 

Antarctic expedition details

The winners will embark on a six-day expedition in December, engaging in activities such as hiking, scientific experiments, and conservation efforts like litter-cleaning initiatives. This experience aims to inspire participants to consider the environmental impact of daily actions and to develop sustainable solutions.

Matrics in Antarctica is supported by the Department of Basic Education. It encourages learners to address global challenges like climate change and conservation. The programme focuses on critical thinking and empowers learners to become sustainability ambassadors within their communities.
