Grade 10 learner Izaiah Solomon earns provincial chess honour

Curro Somerset West’s Grade 10 learner Izaiah Solomon has been selected to represent the Western Cape Boys Under-18 team at the Mzansi Inter-Provincial Youth Chess Championship (MIYCC). His selection follows a strong season of school, district and regional performances.

Early beginnings

Izaiah’s interest in chess started in primary school, where his natural ability quickly stood out. Teachers and coaches noticed his talent, and he began competing in school tournaments, often finishing at the top of his age group. These early experiences laid the foundation for the competitive career he now enjoys.

Rising through the ranks

Now in high school, Izaiah has continued to build on that early promise. His 2025 season was particularly strong:

  • 3rd place in the District East Under-17 Boys Trials, earning selection to the District East Team
  • 7th place in the Cape Metro (WP) Trials, securing a place on the Cape Metro Under-17 Boys Team
  • Top 15 finish at the Western Cape Under-17 Boys Trials, which led to his selection for the Western Cape Under-17 Team

This series of results ultimately led to his selection for the Western Cape Boys Under-18 Team, placing him among the top young players in the province.

Heading to a national event

Izaiah will compete at the MIYCC in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, from 15–20 December 2025. The championship includes a team event with six rounds (15–17 December) and an individual event (17–20 December), giving him the chance to test his skills against South Africa’s top youth players.

A proud moment

Curro Somerset West celebrates Izaiah’s achievement and values the example he sets through perseverance and focus. The school said: ‘His achievements reflect the values we hold dear — excellence, perseverance, and heart. Izaiah’s story inspires not only his peers but the entire Curro community, and we stand behind him as he continues to make bold moves on and off the board.’
