Curro eSport Indaba 2023

The recent Curro eSports Indaba was attended by representatives from various Curro schools as well as members of the Curro Exco. Keynote speakers shared interesting and sometimes even mind-blowing information with the attendees, and in-between these everyone attended breakaways to focus on different aspects of eSports and the coaching thereof. This event was one for the history books!

The indaba, which was held at the Protea Hotel in Stellenbosch and the ATK Arena in Claremont, generated a lot of excitement for what lies ahead for Curro in this digital age. There was also a cocktail event on Tuesday evening, which gave delegates even more time to network with like-minded colleagues.

One of the event organisers, Cindy van der Merwe from Curro Sport, summed it up when she said, ‘We have definitely achieved what we set out to achieve – and that was to upskill and empower our eSports coaches; encouraging them to go back to their respective schools with a strategic plan to maximize the eSports opportunities for the learners at their schools. And to back this up, reading some of the feedback bodes well for the enthusiasm that delegates will now take back to their respective schools.’

Some of this feedback included Tanya Mulder from Cooper College, who said, ‘I loved it! We were raving about it at school so much. It's absolutely amazing to see the way that it started with Minecraft and how it has evolved into different eSports.’ Lorika Jansen from Curro Vanderbijlpark expressed her excitement, stating, ‘Oh, it was amazing! I love this connection, seeing people, chatting with the different teachers, and feeding off the energy.’

Lehlohonolo Ried from Curro Klerksdorp described the event as ‘a really, really great experience’ and explained how it helped him connect and network with individuals who are knowledgeable in eSports. He added, ‘So, I'm really positive that I'll be able to make some change in eSports. I actually see a future in it now.’

The positive feedback from some of the attendees highlights the value of the Curro eSports Indaba as a platform for networking and learning in the exciting world of eSports. The event was expertly organised by Curro Sport in collaboration with Curro Technology and has equipped the attendees with the knowledge and insights to drive eSports forward in their respective schools, and from there, the whole country!

Overall, the Curro eSports Indaba was a significant milestone in the eSports community and demonstrated the enormous potential for growth in this rapidly expanding industry.
