Curro Somerset West learners help break marimba world record

At the beginning of August the Grand Arena at GrandWest in Cape Town filled with the sound of 1 276 marimbas as learners from across the Western Cape and Zimbabwe made history. The gathering broke the Guinness World Record for the Largest Marimba Ensemble – and Curro Somerset West’s Grade 7 elite marimba band and high school marimba band were right in the middle of it.

Playing for history

Curro Somerset West learners performed with precision and energy, under the guidance of music educators Wilmari Reynecke and Renée van den Berg. From the first note to the last beat, their contribution helped create a seamless performance that united players from different schools and countries.

A celebration of youth and culture

Kfm 94.5 captured the atmosphere: ‘Can you hear that? It’s the sound of more than 1 000 marimba players making history in Cape Town! The most beautiful soundtrack was created as musicians came together for one goal.’ The radio station also acknowledged Marimba Jam’s role in coordinating the event and bringing together participants from South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde shared his pride: ‘Today, Western Cape schools officially made history with the largest marimba ensemble ever recorded – 1 276 talented young people drumming as one! Learners from Zimbabwe and South Africa worked together to achieve this stunning win. This achievement belongs to every learner, educator, organiser and supporter.’

A shared milestone

Curro Somerset West expressed its excitement and honour at being part of the record-breaking moment, which was as inspiring to witness as it was to play in. The performance showcased the power of music to connect young people, build community and create memories that will last a lifetime.
