International mathematics competitions ask learners to do more than calculate quickly. They test reasoning, proof and the ability to find a route through unfamiliar problems.

That is the level Kylie Leung will step into when she represents South Africa at the 2026 Mongolian International Mathematics Competition in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 22 to 27 July.

The Year 8 learner from Courtney House International has been selected as a member of one of 16 official South African teams for the competition. Before travelling, Kylie is attending preparation training in Bloemfontein, where selected learners receive advanced mathematical training and work through Olympiad-style problem-solving techniques.

A demanding selection route

South Africa’s participation is coordinated by the Junior International Mathematics Competition Organising Body South Africa, which identifies and trains strong primary and secondary mathematics learners for international competition.

The process uses assessments, selection tests and specialist training camps to select learners on merit. Kylie’s place in one of the official teams therefore follows a competitive pathway rather than a single nomination.

The Mongolian International Mathematics Competition is known for problems that require mathematical reasoning. Learners face questions in algebra, geometry, combinatorics and number theory, with emphasis on logic, creativity and proof.

Building on earlier results

Kylie’s selection follows a strong 2025. She was invited to JIMCOBSA’s Girls Mathematics Training Camp in Stellenbosch, where only 25 learners from across South Africa were invited. She also achieved gold in the South African Mathematics Olympiad.

On top of all that, Kylie also finished second overall at the national Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Level 6.
