Creston College’s Jess Stott shines at SA Junior Surfing Championships
23 October 2024Creston College’s Jess Stott made waves at the SA Junior Surfing Championships, held in September at Lower Point, Jeffreys Bay, a prime surf location in South Africa. Representing the Ugu district, Jess joined 180 of South Africa’s top junior surfers and showcased her talents on a national platform. For Jess, a young surfer still building her career, the event was both a milestone and a learning experience.
Reflecting on her preparation, Jess shared the intentional focus she brought to training, particularly since Jeffreys Bay’s waves break to the right. ‘I did ten pops (surfing practice movements) a day out of the water at home and spent as much time as I could in the water,’ Jess said. ‘Since I am goofy-footed (right foot leads on the board while the left foot stays at the back), I usually ride lefts, so I practised right waves as often as possible.’ Her commitment ensured she was ready to take on the unique challenges Jeffreys Bay presented.

Highlights from a competitive experience
The SA Junior Champs provided Jess with unforgettable experiences, including a rare chance to surf Lower Point with only four others in the water. ‘Normally, there are over 50 surfers fighting to get a wave,’ she explained. She also appreciated the support from her family, friends, and team, which added to the special moments of the competition. With this experience under her belt, Jess is already motivated to return in 2025, saying, ‘It has inspired me to go back, especially now that I know how it’s all run and what to expect.’

Support from the Creston College community
Jess acknowledged Creston College’s encouragement throughout her journey. The school regularly shared posts on social media celebrating her accomplishments, which Jess said inspired her and others at Creston. ‘My school has also recognised surfing within the school, which is great,’ she added, reflecting on the school’s support and growing interest in surfing.

Overcoming challenges and staying motivated
Competitive surfing brings its own challenges, especially at new locations where conditions change daily. She added that that the impressive skill level of her fellow competitors in her age group also pushed her to perform her best.
With a solid foundation of experience and a supportive school community, Jess’s journey in competitive surfing is one Creston College is proud to celebrate.
