Curro Hillcrest’s Kailey Joubert dives into success

Curro Hillcrest’s Grade 9 learner, Kailey Joubert, has earned a spot on the South African Open Water Team, representing the nation at the Africa Aquatics Zone 4 Open Water Swimming Championships in Namibia this December. As the only KwaZulu-Natal swimmer selected, Kailey’s journey from club records to national honours highlights her dedication and love for the sport.

Early beginnings in swimming

Kailey has been making waves in the swimming community since a young age. Her passion for the sport was evident from her early years, when she trained at Aquazone Swim Club. Guided by coach Angela Van Heerden in the Performance Gold Squad, Kailey has developed her skills and achieved impressive milestones.

A rising star in open water swimming

Kailey’s journey into open water swimming began in 2020 when, at just 11 years old, she participated in her first Midmar Mile. Swimming for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC), this experience sparked her love for open water events. Over the years, she has demonstrated resilience and determination, overcoming challenges such as a sprained elbow and surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome earlier this year.

Her achievements include representing KwaZulu-Natal at the South African Open Water Championships in Jeffreys Bay, where she earned second place in the 3km event. In 2023, she was the second female finisher in the 1km swim at Capital K. Kailey’s performance in the 2024 Midmar Mile was equally remarkable, placing 21st in the women’s main event for ages 14 to 30.

Kailey’s hard work has earned her a spot on the South African Open Water Team, making her the only swimmer from KwaZulu-Natal selected to compete at the Africa Aquatics Zone 4 Open Water Swimming Championships.

Blending compassion with athletic excellence

Her journey in swimming extends beyond competition. In 2019, inspired by her parents’ involvement with ‘The Cows’, a fundraising initiative for CHOC, Kailey donated her hair to cancer patients.

As she prepares for the Africa Aquatics Zone 4 Championships, Curro is eager to see her continue to excel, both in the water and beyond.

Well done, Kailey, and good luck in Windhoek!
