Curro Rivonia takes second place at national AI Hackathon
17 June 2025Four Curro Rivonia learners have achieved national recognition for their work in artificial intelligence at the 2025 IEB–TechWays AI Hackathon. Competing against over 900 learners from 68 IEB schools, the team placed second nationally in the Grade 6–8 category.

Real solutions for real problems
The Hackathon, held in May, challenged learners to apply AI tools to real-world issues. Teams worked through the day to build functional AI prototypes and pitch their ideas to a panel of judges from companies such as Microsoft, e4, Ozow, and Melio AI.
Seth Duma, Aaryan Datadin, Zoë Mwasinga, and Fatso Maake created a solution that improves how municipalities manage citizen complaints. Their AI system streamlines service responses, reduces delays, and supports more efficient city operations.
A future-focused platform
The event was organised by the Independent Examinations Board in partnership with TechWays and NextGrid, with the goal of giving learners hands-on exposure to coding, problem-solving, and AI thinking. Participants were guided through the AI development pipeline – from identifying an issue to pitching a final prototype.
More about the event is available via TechWays and IEB.
