Robert Starkey, a former matric learner at Curro Salt Rock, is scheduled to leave for Davenport University in Michigan in the United States in mid-August 2020 where he will be a student-athlete in golf. According to Robert, this is partly thanks to the teachers and staff of Curro Salt Rock. 

Towards the end of 2018 an agency called Crimson Education, which assists learners with the process of becoming student-athletes, did a presentation at Curro Salt Rock. ‘This was like no other that I had seen before’, explains Robert. He was reaching the stage in his high school career where he had to decide what path to pursue. ‘I took the pamphlet to my parents and we discussed whether this was the right thing for me and after much thought and consideration, we came to the conclusion that this was going to be the path I would follow.’ 

His Curro Salt Rock teachers assisted him with the application process and on 13 May 2019 his journey began. ‘From here on out, reality started to hit me. My SAT scores, along with my golf achievements were used to compile an athletics portfolio which was sent to many universities in the United States. A few weeks later, offers from various universities started pouring in.’ Eventually, Robert decided on Davenport University after they offered him a scholarship of 75%. He has been meeting with his golf team (made up of eight players and three coaches) once a week since his acceptance in anticipation of his departure. 

Robert is excited about his new adventure and says that this would not have been possible without Curro. ‘If Curro had not invited Crimson to do a presentation, I would not be in the position that I am today. I am eternally grateful to the teachers for getting me through the trying times of high school, and for playing a major role in my acceptance.’
