Curro Halala Cup 2026: 64 schools compete across regions

Three days of regional fixtures saw 64 schools compete across the country in the Curro Halala Cup, with top teams advancing to the next stage after round-robin play from 17 to 19 April.

Regional fixtures set the tone

Matches took place across eight regions, from Curro Century City in the Western Cape to Curro Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. Conditions varied across venues, with wind and rain affecting some fixtures while others ran in clear weather.

Host campuses welcomed squads and supporters, with fixtures moving quickly and crowds engaged throughout matchdays. Northern Academy described ‘an incredible two days of football’ with ‘thrilling goals’ and ‘outstanding teamwork’.

Structured format drives competition

The tournament followed a round-robin format, with two pools of four teams in each region. Matches were played in 30-minute halves with rolling substitutions, and points from wins and draws determined standings.

Seeding introduced a more defined competitive structure this year, shaping matchups and adding tactical focus in the opening stage. One school referred to it as ‘a new system designed for fairer matchups and stronger competition’.

Schools including Waterstone College, HeronBridge College, Northern Academy, Curro Nelspruit, Curro Century City, Curro Bloemfontein and Curro Hillcrest hosted fixtures across the regions.

Operations and match delivery

Fixtures ran according to schedule, with officials maintaining match standards in line with FIFA regulations. Operations teams managed logistics, while heads of sport oversaw match delivery across venues.

At Curro Century City, Executive Head Christiaan Maree reflected on the weekend: ‘The Halala Cup delivered a remarkable display of camaraderie, fiercely competitive football, and a genuine love for the game. Despite challenging conditions, the spirit of the tournament never wavered.’

He added that heavy rain affected the Sunday programme, noting that ‘relentless rainfall forced the match between Curro Century City and Milnerton High to be halted midway, with remaining fixtures set to be rescheduled’.

Next stage confirmed

Results from each region determined progression, with top teams advancing to the regional play-offs on 23 May 2026. Those fixtures will shape the pathway to the national final, scheduled for August at HeronBridge College.
