Curro Hazeldean learner represents South Africa at International Chemistry Olympiad
28 August 2025Curro Hazeldean’s Claire Le Roux achieved an extraordinary milestone this year, representing South Africa at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2025) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

From National Olympiad to the world stage
Claire’s journey began with the National Science Olympiad, where her strong results placed her among 12 learners invited to compete in the second round. From there, the country’s Top 4 were selected to represent South Africa – and Claire earned her place.
She travelled to Dubai in July, joining learners from across the globe for nine days of competition, learning, and cultural exchange. At the event, Claire also achieved the highest score among the South African team.

Balancing academics, leadership, and sport
Claire maintains an academic average of 90% while serving as Deputy Head Girl and competing in Curro Hazeldean’s first hockey and swimming teams. Physical Science teacher John Nyoni said it was a proud moment to have three of his learners in the national Top 12 and to see Claire advance to the Top 4.
‘She is a student that seeks to learn, and her constant curiosity about the world will lead her to great opportunities,’ said John.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience
Reflecting on her time at IChO, Claire said: ‘The IChO exams were both challenging and exciting, truly testing our perseverance, creativity and problem-solving skills. What made the experience truly memorable, however, were the tours through Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where we visited malls, mosques, museums and even theme parks. During the full 10-day trip I grew as a person, as I met people from all over the world, learnt about their cultures and embraced them. This competition is honestly a once in a lifetime experience, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend.’
