Courtney House International learner Jake heads to the John Locke Institute.

Year 12 learner Jake Reyneke continues to draw attention at Courtney House International through his commitment to acting, film, visual art and academic engagement. His development shows how curiosity opens opportunities for deeper learning.

A learner who builds through creativity

The school describes Jake as ‘a shining example of this spirit’, noting his blend of artistic ability, intellectual curiosity and leadership. Jake explained what draws him to the arts: ‘Acting, film, and art are my favourite forms of curiosity. Whether I’m sketching on a napkin, putting hours of practice into a monologue, or editing a video late at night, there’s always something to explore.’

His involvement in Curro Create has shaped his growth as a performer. Jake said: ‘Creativity isn’t about pretending – it’s about honesty.’ He learned that powerful work grows from authenticity and from allowing his real perspective to shape what appears on screen or stage.

Creative projects, performance and leadership

Across Curro Create programmes such as #Straight2Camera and Acting 4 Film, Jake has expanded his skills through guidance from industry mentors. His achievements include:

  • Multiple Black Raven Awards for art, singing and monologues (2023–2024)
  • Top 5 Finalist in the #Straight2Camera Monologue Competition (2023), mentored by Ira Blanckenberg
  • Double Gold Award at the Curro Create National Youth Theatre Festival (2023)
  • Representing South Africa at the FITASC Clay Target Shooting World Championship in Italy (2025)
  • Courtney House International Leadership Award (2023)

His training spans a filmmaking course with Jacques Gombault, the kykNET-presented Speeltoneel programme taught by actor Sean van Noordwyk, a presenting course with industry professionals and on-set experience in productions such as Diepe Waters and Mia and the White Lion.

Beyond performance, he contributes to the school community by narrating and building props for productions, creating media content for events and presenting at school functions. He has also served as a class representative over several terms.

An academic milestone in December

Jake’s next step reflects his interest in the connection between ideas and creative expression. In December 2025, he will attend the John Locke Institute’s Philosophy, Politics and Economics Programme in Singapore.

Beyond school, Jake aims to pursue a BA in Acting and Filmmaking from 2026. His goal is to develop both the intellectual and creative sides of his work. As he put it: ‘It’s demanding work, but the kind that leaves you feeling more human afterwards.’
