From swimmer to champion: Henju Duvenhage's journey at Miami University

Henju Duvenhage, a Curro Durbanville alumnus, has had an outstanding swimming career at Miami University in Ohio. Since leaving South Africa to study and compete in the United States, Henju has excelled as both an athlete and student, making a significant impact on the university’s athletics programme.

Henju competes in Division I of the NCAA as a member of the RedHawks swimming and diving team at Miami University. The NCAA stands for the National Collegiate Athletic Association – a governing body for college sports in the United States. Henju’s efforts have helped his team secure four consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship titles. The MAC is a highly competitive collegiate athletic conference with universities across the Midwest, and winning a title in any sport requires top-tier performance.

He has claimed 10 individual MAC championships across events like the 100m and 200m butterfly, consistently pushing the limits of his performance. In addition, he has broken multiple school records, becoming one of Miami University’s standout swimmers. Despite dealing with injuries, Henju remains committed to qualifying for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships – a prestigious event that brings together the country’s best swimmers.

With only a few meets remaining in his collegiate career, he is focused on securing a fifth straight MAC title and leaving a legacy as a leader and mentor for his team.

Henju has also earned recognition academically. He has received several academic honours, demonstrating his ability to succeed both in and out of the pool. He is currently in his final year of undergraduate studies and plans to pursue a Master's degree after graduation in May. His future goals include a career in medical device design, a field where he can combine his academic background with a passion for innovation.
