Curro Brackenfell junior choir places second in national competition

Curro Brackenfell’s junior choir (the Knightingales) won second place in kykNET’s national Sing in Harmonie choir competition of 2021, as broadcast on Sunday, 8 May 2022. The adjudicators praised their articulation, discipline, and pleasant well-rounded sound. This was Curro Brackenfell’s second stab at the competition after competing against 22 other schools from around the country last September.

The junior choir and senior choir (who also participated) both practised twice a week in the mornings for 45 minutes, according to choir teacher, Lelanie Hoffmann. They had to practise with face shields because of COVID-19, choir leader Myrtle van den Heever said. ‘We also lost a lot of practice time when one of the waves hit last year.’

In 2019, the junior choir was dubbed as the overall winners for the junior choir category in the Western Cape, as well as the category of non-Afrikaans song.

The choir is led by Myrtle van den Heever who composes music pieces and chooses the repertoire, accompanied by Lelanie Hoffman. The school’s junior and senior choirs have a combined number of 180 participating learners, all of whom thoroughly enjoy participating with their whole hearts and beautiful voices.
