Curro Esports teams take titles at African Gaming Championship 2026

GrandWest Entertainment World became a meeting point for school Esports, open competitions and gaming activity from 16 to 19 July 2026, with Curro teams among the title winners at the African Gaming Championship 2026.

The event, held in Cape Town, included the Nitro African Schools League Finals. Curro participated as an official event partner, while Curro Esports hosted its own Minecraft competition.

Curro Durbanville High School finished first in the Rocket League School tournament, Curro Krugersdorp High School placed second in the Valorant School tournament, and Curro Durbanville Primary School finished first in the Minecraft PVP School tournament. Curro Brackenfell’s teams placed fourth and fifth in the Fortnite Trios ASL Schools tournament.

Schools, staff and equipment behind the teams

Curro Esports Project Manager, Magdeleen de Kock, elaborated, ‘AGC this year was another showcase of high school Esports at its best. From Rocket League and Fortnite to Minecraft and Valorant, the massive hall was full of learners and computers, and the energy and atmosphere were phenomenal!’

Staff from several Curro schools worked through part of the school holidays to manage logistics and support players. Magdeleen highlighted Marilize Matthee from Curro Hazeldean, Lauren Henry from Curro Durbanville Primary School, Bertus Liebenberg from Curro Krugersdorp, Candice Bartsch from Curro Brackenfell Primary School and the coaching team from Curro Durbanville High School.

Curro also provided hardware to two schools that wanted to take part and did not have the necessary equipment. Curro Sandown supplied computers that helped make the Minecraft tournament possible.

Lauren said the organisation of the event made a difference for the learners.

‘My boys had so much fun. It was very, very well run. Everything was smooth, no issues at all. And we always look forward to these things when Mags is hosting, when she's in charge. It's always the best!’

Coaches see progress under pressure

Candice supported Curro Brackenfell’s Rocket League and Fortnite teams and also entered the Fortnite Open as a player. That gave her a view of the championship from the coaching area and the competition floor.

For Marilize, the event gave Curro Hazeldean’s first-year GritX Esports club a chance to measure its progress against stronger opposition.

‘This experience has been incredibly inspiring,’ she said. ‘Our players have learned valuable lessons from competing at the highest level, and every match has helped us identify new opportunities to grow.’

Bertus said Curro Krugersdorp’s second place in the Valorant School tournament marked an excellent result, while the team’s composure and support for one another stood out during the competition. He said their preparation and teamwork showed clear growth, and that the experience had motivated them to return stronger.

After three days of school league competition, Magdeleen said Curro’s results showed that its Esports programme had built depth across several titles.

The AGC results gave Curro first places in Rocket League and Minecraft PVP, a runner-up finish in Valorant, and two top-five finishes in Fortnite Trios.
