Former Curro Kathu learner Karléne Ludik has returned to her alma mater, this time as an assistant teacher, sports coach, and creative contributor to campus life.
Early leadership on and off the field
Karléne matriculated in 2021 after serving as Deputy Head Girl and captaining the first-team hockey side from Grade 8 through to matric. Her sporting talent was recognised with full honorary colours in athletics and biathlon for three consecutive years, from 2019 to 2021. She also received full colours for her 2018 science project, which was presented at the National Expo.
International experience and return to education
After matric, Karléne worked as an au pair locally and then in the Netherlands. She returned to South Africa in August 2024 and rejoined Curro Kathu as an assistant teacher while beginning her education studies. She had previously worked at the school in 2023 as a Curro Choice Liaison before travelling abroad.
Building a balanced role in school life
In 2025, Karléne took on the role of under-17 hockey coach, qualified as a Learn to Swim instructor, and relaunched her photography business.
‘I am a proud old girl from Curro Kathu and now I proudly work here,’ said Karléne. ‘Upon returning to South Africa, I rejoined Curro Kathu in August 2024 as an assistant teacher. I have since started studying education. This year, I became the proud coach of the under 17 hockey team, am a Learn To Swim instructor, and have relaunched my photography business.’
A community connection that endures
Karléne’s roots in regional sport run deep. In 2020, she represented the Griqua team while still at Curro Kathu, demonstrating early commitment to local athletics. Her return to the school highlights the value of long-term relationships between staff and learners, and shows how former learners can return as role models and leaders.
