Curro Schools to Host and Participate in World Robot Olympiad

Three Curro Schools are gearing up to host the upcoming annual provincial legs of the World Robot Olympiad South Africa (WROSA), with public and independent schools throughout the provinces battling it out for a place at the nationals. The provincials will kick off in Gauteng at Curro Aurora on 21 July 2023, whereafter the Western Cape leg will be hosted at Curro Durbanville on 5 August 2023. Curro Salt Rock will be hosting the KwaZulu-Natal leg on 5 August 2023. As an additional level of excitement, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde will be opening the Western Cape provincials!

This year a total of 192 teams entered the competition, which amounts to 492 learners taking part in the following five categories:

  • RoboMission (101 teams)
  • Future Innovators (12 teams)
  • RoboSport (9 teams)
  • Future Engineers (3 teams)
  • Explorer (67 teams)

Curro has had a great presence at previous WRO events. Annually about 25% of the national competitors come from Curro’s schools. In 2015, a team from Grantleigh won the Elementary RoboMission and represented South Africa in Doha Qatar. In 2016, two teams from Grantleigh won the Elementary RoboMission and the Senior High RoboMission categories and represented South Africa in New Delhi, India.

In 2017, a Grantleigh team won the Elementary Robomission again and represented South Africa in Costa Rica. In 2018, two Curro teams from Grantleigh represented South Africa in Thailand. In 2021, a team from Curro Aurora represented South Africa in the Senior High Category. This event was held in Canada, but the competition was held virtually due to Covid-19.

This year the following Curro schools will be participating in the WROSA:

Gauteng:

KwaZulu-Natal:

Western Cape:

We wish you all the teams the best! Keep an eye out for the results.
