Curro Krugersdorp learner Matthew Wilson to represent South Africa at World Karate Championships

Matthew Wilson, a Grade 8 learner at Curro Krugersdorp High School, has been selected to represent South Africa at the WUFK World Karate Championships in Sweden from 8 to 13 July 2025. At only 14 years old, Matthew joins South Africa’s first-ever Karate SA team to compete at a WUFK event, marking a major moment in his karate journey.

A national first for Karate South Africa

Matthew is part of the first team from Karate South Africa (KSA) to compete internationally under the World Union of Karate Do Federations (WUFK). This governing body, headquartered in Belgium, oversees sport karate across 85 member countries. His participation places both him and his country on a larger stage, in the 13th edition of the championship.

A journey of transformation

Matthew’s path to international competition has been shaped by personal growth and perseverance. His father, Simon Wilson, shared:

‘Matthew has proven that hard work and perseverance pay off. From a background of being bullied to now standing up for those who are being bullied – I am exceptionally proud of the young man he continues to be.’

Recognition at school and beyond

Curro Krugersdorp’s Facebook and Instagram pages highlighted Matthew’s selection in early June, noting that he is one of the few Grade 8 learners selected nationally. A feature in the local media called it a ‘significant milestone for the sport in South Africa’.

Community support has been strong, with praise from classmates, teachers, and fellow karate enthusiasts.
