Curro Mossel Bay learner claims double gold and two records at SA Championships

Records don’t often fall twice in one weekend, yet Ayden Erasmus did exactly that in Tshwane. Competing in the U17 division at the National High and LSEN Schools Athletics Championships, the Curro Mossel Bay thrower claimed gold in both shot put and discus, rewriting the record books in the process.

Records fall in shot put and discus

Ayden secured gold in the U17 shot put and discus events, extending his hold on both disciplines.

In shot put, he broke the championship record for a second consecutive year, having first set the mark in 2025. His discus performance carried similar impact, with a throw that improved the existing championship record by more than seven metres.

The school described it as ‘an exceptional performance’, adding that Ayden ‘won gold in both the U/17 shot put and discus events’ and ‘broke the U/17 shot put record for a second consecutive year’.

A national platform for top athletes

The National High and LSEN Schools Athletics Championships bring together leading school athletes from across South Africa, with entry typically following strong provincial results.

Field events such as shot put and discus rely on strength, timing and technical execution. Gains are often measured in small margins, which places added weight on performances that significantly extend existing records.

Ayden’s results placed him among the leading field athletes in his age group.

Building momentum

Back-to-back records in shot put and a decisive result in discus reflect steady progression across seasons.

His performances at Pilditch Stadium add to a growing national profile and point towards further opportunities as he moves into higher levels of competition.
