Baobab School’s marimba band performs at Botswana’s presidential inauguration
18 November 2024Baobab School’s marimba band reached a historic milestone by performing at the inauguration of Botswana’s new president at the government headquarters in Gaborone. This prestigious event provided the learners with a unique opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage and left a lasting impression on the school community.
Music teacher Ronald Chikwase, who led the band, described the experience as both humbling and nerve-wracking. “I felt overwhelmed with humility and gratitude, but I was also very nervous as this was the first time for me and the band members,” he shared.

Preparing for the spotlight
In the days leading up to the event, the Baobab community rallied to ensure everything was in place. ‘The school community was very proud and supportive. We had everything and everyone we needed in record time,” said Ronald. Early morning rehearsals became the norm, with the band practising daily at 7:00 while managing their end-of-year exams. Ronald commended their dedication, saying, “I applaud their commitment.’
Beyond rehearsals, logistical preparations such as securing indemnity forms, finalising uniforms, and conducting a site visit were completed in just 48 hours. This meticulous planning contributed to a polished and memorable performance.
A carefully curated repertoire
The band’s setlist balanced timeless classics with modern hits, ensuring broad audience appeal. The medley included ‘Pata Pata,’ ‘In the Jungle,’ Adele’s ‘Hello,’ and an original piece titled ‘The Fast Song.’ ‘We want to cater for the young and the old,’ explained Ronald, highlighting the thought behind their song choices.
Rising to the occasion
The learners faced the high-profile event with a mix of nerves and excitement, but they embraced the moment with confidence. Some even dreamed of meeting His Excellency Duma Boko, Botswana’s new president. Reflecting on the performance’s impact, Ronald noted, ‘This experience opened their minds to a world of possibilities … It shows them the importance of music in society, the corporate world, and this country as a whole.’
For the band members, the event was transformative, offering a deeper understanding of music’s role in connecting people and contributing to their country. ‘Everything I teach them about the significance of music came alive that day, and their appreciation of the subject has a new meaning,’ Ronald said.
Looking ahead
This performance marks the beginning of an exciting journey for the Baobab marimba band. Ronald envisions creating a Baobab marimba band album, organising independent shows, and pursuing further opportunities to perform at government events. ‘We strive for excellence in everything we do. We are global citizens,’ he concluded.
Baobab School celebrates this achievement as a proud moment for the learners and the broader school community, looking forward to more milestones in the future.
