St Dominics Newcastle learner presents at Swiss Youth Science Festival
16 March 2026South Africa’s young science community was represented on an international stage when former St Dominics Newcastle learner Hamzah Ismail presented his work at the Swiss Youth Science Festival (ISTF) in Switzerland.
Hamzah, who completed matric in 2025, joined young innovators from across the world at the global science event, presenting research and engaging with fellow student researchers.

From Eskom Expo to the international stage
Hamzah’s selection followed his work through the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, a national science competition that connects top-performing learners with international platforms.
Through this pathway, he earned the opportunity to participate in the Swiss Youth Science Festival, where learners share research projects, exchange ideas and explore scientific collaboration.
Reflecting on the experience, Hamzah shared his appreciation for the organisations that enabled the opportunity.
‘I would like to begin by expressing my heartfelt gratitude to I-FEST², for creating an international platform that brings together young innovators from across the world and opens doors to life-changing opportunities,’ he said.
Gratitude for the journey
Hamzah also acknowledged the role his school played in supporting his development as a young researcher.
‘I am equally grateful to St Dominics Newcastle for their constant support, encouragement, and belief in my potential,’ he said. ‘The foundation, guidance, and motivation I have received from my school have played a significant role in my journey and growth.’
He also credited the Eskom Expo for creating the pathway that led to the international event.
‘A sincere thank you to Eskom Expo for Young Scientists for providing the pathway that made this opportunity possible,’ Hamzah added.
A global opportunity for young innovators
Participation in international science festivals exposes learners to research from across the world and encourages collaboration between young scientists working in different fields.
St Dominics Newcastle celebrated Hamzah’s achievement and the impact of his participation on the global scientific stage.
‘We are bursting with pride as we celebrate one of our own,’ the school concluded. ‘Hamzah continues to represent South Africa while flying the St Dominics Newcastle flag high.’
