Curro Heuwelkruin High School

Academics

Curro Heuwelkruin is an independent high school in Myngenoegen, Polokwane, that provides high-quality education for learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12. Our dedicated teachers and well-rounded approach prepare learners for the IEB examinations at the end of Grade 12. With small class sizes, dedicated teachers and an enhanced curriculum, we empower learners with 21st-century skills and knowledge to grow into high-performing, self-confident individuals who are ready to become the leaders of the future. Our learners may even use tablets in class throughout high school.

Senior phase: Grade 8 and Grade 9

Our Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners are guided to adjust to a greater workload of higher intensity. Our teaching is aimed at developing innovative and critical thinking, while a problem-solving approach is taken in all subjects. With dedicated teachers and affordable school fees, our enhanced curriculum places great emphasis on problem solving and individual thinking, and learners gain 21st-century skills in subjects such as Technology and Computer Literacy.

Learners benefit from choosing English or Afrikaans as a language of instruction and they receive comprehensive guidance when choosing their elective subjects at the end of Grade 9.

FET phase: Grade 10 to Grade 12

As a Curro School, the FET phase prepares learners for the IEB examinations written at the end of Grade 12. However, our enhanced curriculum emphasises a greater world-readiness rather than a purely examinations-driven approach. Our learners are taught to be independent and innovative in their approach to problem solving, and dealing with current and global issues. Learners express their ideas and take charge of their own lives – all highly valued 21st-century skills. Learners in our small class sizes further benefit by having lessons presented bilingually, in English and Afrikaans. Some of our specialised subjects include Information Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD), and Agricultural Sciences.

Additional subjects online

High-school learners can now extend their subject choices beyond what is offered at our school. Learners can choose from a wide range of subjects, and classes will take place during the school day in the form of live lessons with teachers. These subjects can be seen as an extension of our enhanced curriculum from which our learners already benefit. Find out which subjects are available, and gain more information about this personalised learning experience.

We use tablets in class

At Curro Heuwelkruin, high school learners may use tablets in class rather than textbooks. By exposing learners to the daily use of technology, they are better prepared for the challenges of tertiary studies as well as the ever-changing workplace of the future.

What is meant by an enhanced curriculum?

As a Curro School, we are committed to providing learners with an excellent education. Therefore, our approach to teaching the national CAPS curriculum is based on project-based learning and self-discovery. This approach allows learners in our small class sizes to interact with the learned material or discover the core concepts themselves. Regular assessments and tests still take place, but we focus on ensuring that learners can use their intellectual abilities to discover the material and make it real to them in some way. This further provides them with 21st-century skills, such as problem-solving, research and self-initiated. proactive action.

Curro Heuwelkruin activities

School activities

We believe that participation in sports and cultural activities plays an important role in developing a well-rounded learner and promoting friendship, team-awareness and self-confidence. Therefore, our wide range of activities is designed to help learners discover their inherent talents, or to broaden their exposure beyond their current reference framework. Some of these activities are aimed at boosting learners’ cognitive abilities, while others provide pure enjoyment.

Curro Create

As a Curro School, we offer two Curro Create programmes aimed at helping learners develop their creative talents to their full potential: Curro Arts Superhero (CAS) is an internal creative mentorship platform with a grading element, where learners are encouraged to discover, develop and display their inherent creative talents. Learners can also participate in the annual Curro Create National Youth Theatre Festival, wherein schools enter a one-act play in any genre and official language. The winning plays are chosen through a series of adjudications by world-class theatre-makers, who closely mentor learners throughout the process.

Community outreach programmes

At Curro Heuwelkruin, we believe that community outreach programmes are important not only to benefit the community, but also to develop appreciation and empathy in our learners. Therefore, we host various outreach programmes during the year and learners are actively involved in all areas of the projects.
