Curro Oakdene has a primary school in Johannesburg South. We provide the excellent Curro education to learners from Grade R to Grade 6 (with Grade 7 in 2025). Our learners benefit from having Robotics as a subject, and we limit our class sizes to make sure learners get personal attention. As part of the Curro school group, we combine strong academics with sports and cultural activities – as well as a love of learning – to help our learners grow into the best versions of themselves they can be. We even have isiZulu as a subject.

You get the excellent Curro education

We are committed to providing learners with an excellent education. That is why our approach to teaching the national CAPS curriculum is based on project-based learning and self-discovery. This approach allows our primary school learners to explore the learning material beyond just the textbook through research, experiments and assignments. Regular assessments and tests still take place, but it’s important to us that learners can use their intellectual abilities to make the material real to them in some way.

No homework

Young children need time to run, play, and just be children. That is why our foundation phase learners don’t get any homework after school. All exercises needed for revision or extra practice are done at school.

As part of the Curro school group, our learners enjoy preference when applying to any school in the group. Nearby high schools nearby include Curro Jewel City and Waterstone College, with Curro Edenvale, The King’s School, Curro Academy Parkdene further away.

What happens in Grade R to Grade 7

Our foundation phase starts by helping Grade R learners get ready for the formal learning that starts in Grade 1. In this phase, they learn the basic foundations on which all further learning is based:

  • Language (read, spell, understand, speak, listen)
  • Mathematics (count, understand numbers, addition, subtraction and multiplication)
  • Life skills (physical education, real-life experiences, problem-solving, creativity)

In the intermediate phase, the work becomes less tangible or real, and more abstract. To do this, learners start with project-based learning, which means they do research, assignments, and experiments to explore the material outside just the textbook.

Teaching takes place in English, and learners can choose Afrikaans and isiZulu as additional language options. They also have Robotics as a subject throughout primary school.

How big are the classes?

We control the number of learners per class to be no more than 25, so that our teachers have the time and space to give personal attention to each learner, in exactly the places that they need. This is just one of the ways that we create an environment where your child will enjoy what they learn and love coming to school.

Activities your child can enjoy

One part of the excellent Curro education, is that academics are balanced with sports and cultural activities. Participation in activities promote team-awareness, collaboration, and self-confidence. Activities such as art and choir help learners develop the skills to gather their thoughts and express themselves in creative ways. Our focused variety of activities, such as music and the specialised B-Active fitness programme, are tailored to the interests of learners in our area. Your child is sure to find something that will pique their interest.
