Curro Heuwelkruin Matric 2022

You had a bear celebrity with a special bear identity, who helped you forget your worries and your strife. Matric is an important and often stressful year, but it’s also a time to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Your school’s teddy shared in the experience!

Let’s hear it from your school captains

Head girl: Marungoane Queen Mapheto

Coming to high school I expected transformation, I just didn’t know how astronomical it would be. At Curro Heuwelkruin we are given a platform to shine brighter than the sun, we are made into lights that shine in the dark and we are transformed into the best people we could ever be. ‘The future leaders of tomorrow’ isn’t just a slogan used to rope people in. I can confidently say that I believe I am a future leader, that there is a difference I can make because of the platform I was given.

It has been almost five long and difficult years but every second was worth it. The long hours and various sports tours, the wonderfully directed plays and the dozens of speeches. The laughs we shared with the friends we made, the smiles we gave our teachers when we walked by and most importantly the hugs we gave in times of comfort and sadness as well as in times of success and celebration. Our school is not just a machine of academic excellence but it is also a builder of character. Being head girl of this amazing school transformed me from an ordinary girl to a hockey player even though I hated sport, to an Afrikaans orator even though I was audience-shy, to a 79 in Physics even though I hated Newton’s Laws. Curro Heuwelkruin transformed me into me and I am so glad I get to take that into the outside world from next year on.

Head boy: Storm Keating

What a time this has been. The privilege of being 2022’s head boy was a dream come true. I needed that responsibility. I needed that mental growth. I needed to learn not to stay but rather to strike at anything that was and still might be thrown in my way.

Being a learner at Curro Heuwelkruin has taught me multiple, what I like to call, diamond lessons: those we all learn in life only after we have gone through it. Without pressure (whether it be stress for an exam, a test, a task, the build-up to a finals game) and heat from struggles we all might go through, the small carbon atoms cannot change into the crystal-clear diamonds we are all after.

Coming to the end of this year, I started to realise that I, and many more, have the opportunity to start with something new. The hand-over and transition into a different type of life will be tough but diamond mines are all over the place, not just in this part of my life.
