Who is Curro Create?

At Curro, we intentionally spark of creativity by offering a platform where learners can discover and grow their inherent interests – and get mentored by industry professionals along the way. Whether these interests are photography, painting, game development, writing, song-writing, and others – there is a space for every passion. Our learners have the opportunity to reach a provincial and national stage of recognition and personal achievement – and an exceptional few even reached the Woordfees stage and a kykNET TV show.

The success of this platform is built on the research that the Curro Create team conducted by visiting – and working with – performing arts schools in New York, Sydney and Europe, as well as other leading international programmes. All of our time, experience, and resources are poured into our creative learners – even a once-off scholarship toward studying the tertiary arts – helping them become not only cultural dynamites, but future-proof.

Why such a focus on the arts?

It’s more than performance … it’s more than dancing, acting, writing, singing, or directing. It’s teamwork, collaboration, resilience, self-confidence, self-discipline, and reconnecting with our emotions in a world that’s becoming ever-more tech driven. It’s rediscovering what makes us intrinsically human and sharing that humanity. That is what the arts teach – that’s what will make your child future-proof. And that’s what we do at Curro Create.

What is Curro Create?

Curro Create is the engine that drives creative growth at Curro schools, through a variety of projects, all aimed at helping learners progress in their inherent creative interests. Whether these are photography, fine art, presenting for television, writing, online game development, performing a song or monologue or others, this is a space for every passion.

Furthermore, we believe that cultural activities offer more than just enjoyment. They foster emotional well-being, create a sense of accomplishment, build confidence and resilience, and introduces learners to a supportive environment for self-expression.

Here are the various projects we host:

Curro Arts Superhero (CAS)

The first of Curro Create’s projects – and often considered the basis on which the other platforms were founded – CAS is run each year at every school that has learners from Grade 4. During this annual timeframe, learners submit their works of art – whatever these might be. Their artwork is then then weighed against their own artwork and the insight of the mentor-adjudicator, instead of against other submissions (as with traditional competition-driven platform). The highest accolade in CAS is a Kryptonite certificate and blazer badge to learners who attained 95 – 100% for their creative work.

National Youth Theatre Festival

This project is a one-act festival, where learners’ plays are evaluated for acting, directing, and writing. These are also evaluated by a group of industry expert mentor-adjudicators after a full week of theatre extravagance where the participating plays are performed in front of an audience. Learners receive a certificate for the play, ranging from Participation to Double Gold. Trophies awarded range from accolades to the coveted Theatre Wings – a blazer badge that shows the world they are exceptional theatre kids.

#Acting4Film

Stemming from our popular #Straight2Camera Monologue festival, this project focuses solely on learners who are interested in film or television acting. Learners record their own versions of the best film monologues in the industry and the top 15 finalists are recorded in a professional film studio. They act opposite professional actors, their final work is directed by a professional director, and the finals are celebrated in a red-carpet film screening and award ceremony in Cape Town.

Actors pick a monologue from the prescribed list, rehearse it, film it, and submit it to our panel of experts. This project has a competitive side, as there is one final winner in each category. Grades 4 – 7 learners are evaluated in the YoungStars category, Grades 8 to 10 learners in The Rising Stars category, with The Stars category evaluated in Grades 11 and 12. Advanced Mentorship Programme (AMP)

AMP is an exclusive mentorship programme where the utmost exceptional creatives are identified to receive exceptional, personalised mentoring by industry professionals. To do this, our experts evaluate the CAS work, as learners cannot apply for AMP. The mentor and learner then go on a two to three-month journey that invariably leads to a gigantic leap in the skills of the young creatives.

And a little extra … A Playdate with Curious Kate

In 2020, the Curro Create team pulled together their considerable resources and conceptualised, wrote, sourced actors, filmed, and published on YouTube, A Playdate with Curious Kate – all within two weeks of concept! The idea with this is for young children to have a virtual playdate with Kate and her friends, which included singing, dancing, crafts, and reading.
