2023 is not just another academic year, it’s a year of dreams, determination, and academic excellence. Our matriculants have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone, and as they embark on this final journey, let us remember that their success reflects their dedication and our unwavering support. Together, we will make it.
Head boy: Katlego Sibeko
Reflecting on my year as head boy, I am filled with gratitude for the privilege to serve our school community. It has been a year of immense growth, challenges, and valuable lessons.
First and foremost, leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about listening, learning, and collaborating. I encountered various challenges, from managing conflicting opinions to balancing academics and responsibilities. However, I learnt that with open communication and a willingness to compromise, we can find common ground and achieve our goals together.
Another crucial lesson I’ve learnt is the importance of empathy. Understanding the diverse backgrounds and experiences within our school has allowed me to better support and connect with my fellow learners. Empathy fosters a sense of belonging and unity, which is essential for any leader.
Time management has also been a significant challenge. Juggling schoolwork, extramural activities and leadership duties required careful planning and prioritisation. I discovered that effective time management not only improves productivity but also reduces stress.
To future candidates, I offer this advice: Be authentic and true to yourself. Leadership is not about trying to be someone you’re not, but rather about harnessing your unique qualities to inspire and empower others. Trust your team, communicate openly, and embrace change as an opportunity for growth.
I want to express my gratitude to the entire school community for their support and trust. It has been an honour to serve as head boy, and I look forward to witnessing the incredible leadership of those who will follow in my footsteps. Together, we can continue to make our school a place of growth, unity and excellence.
Head girl: Phemelo Molebatsi
I served as the head girl of Curro Academy Mahikeng. Leadership has never been easy. It requires courage, optimism and doing your best. Leadership is being open to learning from others and I’m all about that. A leader is someone who knows the way, shows the way and follows that path. Leadership is a big challenge, but it doesn't matter, especially when you have a cohesive team. Emotional intelligence is necessary because along the way, you will face many people who disapprove of your leadership techniques. My emotional intelligence has helped me overcome many of the challenges I have faced in this role. Leadership is like a giant model that must be built every day, using many different parts to complete it. Being head girl at Curro Academy Mahikeng has been a truly wonderful experience and the leaders I have worked with have made my job easier. Leadership has its ups and downs. It's just a learning process to gain more experience. It taught me how to work with people and it has also improved my engagement skills with people. As John Maxwell said, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team.’ It is a start of a new journey and the end of an old journey. I’m just grateful to have experienced this beside wonderful leaders.
