Curro Oakdene Primary School

Academics

Curro Oakdene is an independent Curro School in Oakdene, Johannesburg, with a primary school phase that provides high-quality education to learners from Grade R to Grade 4 (with higher grades phasing in annually). With small class sizes, dedicated teachers, and an enhanced curriculum, we empower learners with 21st-century skills and knowledge to grow into high-performing, self-confident individuals who are ready to become the leaders of the future.

Foundation phase: Grade R to Grade 3

With dedicated teachers and small class sizes, our foundation phase starts by providing the emotional and intellectual foundation required to handle the formal learning that starts in Grade 1. We then gradually develop learners’ skills and knowledge in basic areas such as language (comprehension, speaking, and listening), mathematics (counting and understanding numbers), and creative problem-solving in an environment where they enjoy coming to school. Through our enhanced curriculum, learners are introduced to project-based learning and they gain 21st-century skills through subjects such as Robotics, and even have isiZulu as an additional language option.

The attention span and optimum learning hours for learners in foundation phase greatly vary from that of older learners. They also still need time and space to run and play like only young children can. This is why our foundation phase learners do not get any homework.

Intermediate phase: Grade 4 to Grade 7

As higher grades phase in annually, a Grade 5 class is planned to be available from 2023. Learners in our small class sizes will be taught to work with the learned material in an abstract manner and the nature of the content will gradually build to become more intellectual and abstract. As a Curro School, our learners will follow an enhanced curriculum introducing them to 21st-century skills such as Robotics.

We are Robotics inclusive

Our dedicated teachers give learners personal attention in the classroom, which helps to ensure that they achieve to the best of their abilities. Our learners further benefit from specialised subjects such as Robotics, which introduces learners to 21st-century skills such as coding and automation.

Curro Oakdene activities

Sports activities

We believe that participation in sports activities plays an important role in developing a well-rounded learner and promoting friendship, team-awareness and self-confidence. Our focused range of carefully selected activities – including karate and yoga – are designed to help learners discover their enjoyment of movement and non-verbal expression of energy. In addition, yoga teaches learners how to manage and release their anxiety and other overwhelming emotions in a healthy manner, through breathing and stretches that relax their body and mind.

Cultural activities

As a Curro School, culture is one of the foundational pillars of developing a well-balanced learner and plays a great role in broadening learners’ reference frameworks. Our learners have the opportunity to participate in several cultural activities, regardless of their interests and abilities in sport or academics.

These activities introduce learners to valuable experiences and real-life skills that few other platforms allow. Participation in cultural activities provides learners with self-confidence and presentation skills that will benefit them well into their professional lives.
