Teachers have assistants and are trained in first aid
As a Curro school, our small class sizes are divided by age group and each teacher has one or more assistants, depending on the group – there are more assistants for the younger ones to ensure they each get the necessary love and attention. Furthermore, all teachers have first-aid training to ensure that our children get the most from our affordable school fees.
Our aftercare programme called Stay and Play runs until late in the afternoon to accommodate working parents. A teacher is employed specially to run this programme. Children are accommodated in safe classrooms and playgrounds and are engaged in fun, exciting activities. They also receive a freshly prepared meal and a healthy snack. Stay and Play is offered at an additional cost, but we also offer a waiting class until 13:30 which forms part of our affordable school fees.
Our preschool is closed during school holidays, although we run a holiday care programme for a determined period, at an additional cost. We are also closed for a specified period during December and January, as well as on public holidays.
Our multi-disciplinary therapy team consists of speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and educational psychologists. We have a fully equipped therapy room for all above-mentioned disciplines and children are assessed and treated at school during the morning. All therapists are available for afternoon therapy too.
Our experienced therapists have been fully integrated into the preschool and its staff for many years. These therapists provide ongoing teacher-training at regular periods throughout the year. The team meets weekly and regularly provides detailed therapy and feedback to teachers as well as parents. Each therapist is fully qualified, highly experienced and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Indoor and outdoor play areas
As a Curro school, we know that children learn by interacting with the world around them. Therefore, our indoor areas offer multiple opportunities to explore, investigate, imagine and create. Our outdoor play areas include jungle gyms, play houses, shaded areas for creative and sensory play, and more – everything your child might want to have loads of fun.
Curro Chartwell history
Land of Oz Nursery School in Fourways (now known as Curro Fourways) was founded in 1987 by our first Executive Head, Maureen Irving. The school started as a playgroup with small class sizes for boys and girls from 18 months to 3 years, but soon expanded to accommodate children form 12 months to 5 years in 1994. Our safe, nurturing environment based on Christian values (ethics and morals) and excellent offerings helped us expand to become members of the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA) by 1997.
The second preschool campus (now known as Curro Chartwell) opened in 2007 in Chartwell, providing the community with another dynamic environment for learning. However, our school further grew in popularity so that we moved to our current, much larger, campus in Chartwell.
After 33 years of offering excellence in early childhood education, January 2020 saw a new chapter as we joined the Curro group while maintaining affordable school fees. Two years later, the campuses that comprised Land of Oz Nursery School, now act as unique entities, each a Curro school, to better improve their approaches to early childhood development.
