We are open during school holidays and run a full holiday-care programme at no additional cost. Regular activities continue, although we may arrange some extra fun activities during this time. We are closed only for a specified period during December and January.
Teachers have assistants
As a Curro School, our classes are divided by age group and each teacher has one or more assistants, depending on the group and the number of children in the class. There are often more assistants for the younger ones, all included in the school fees, to ensure that each child in our small class sizes gets the necessary love and attention.
On-site therapists and a registered nurse
We have a registered nurse on-site during the school day to take care of our children as part of our school fees. We also have on-site therapy rooms in which registered therapists work with children – in collaboration with teachers and parents – to ensure a holistic approach to children’s development. We also have a working relationship with the Petervale Children’s Therapy Centre who often use our therapy rooms.
Separated areas based on age group
Our preschool is divided into three areas, to ensure the safety and appropriate play areas of our children. Our baby hub accommodates children from 3 to 24 months and is separated from older age groups because their daily routines and caring needs are different. Older children are accommodated in the south and north wings of the school, with particular focus on school-readiness preparation for our Grade R learners. This preparation service is conducted by a qualified assessor and is included in our school fees.
As a Curro School, our on-site kitchen is fully equipped to prepare well-balanced meals – breakfast, lunch, and two snacks per day – for all age groups at our preschool. All meals are prepared with fresh ingredients just before being delivered to the classrooms. These meals are also included in our school fees and we carefully accommodate all allergy and religious dietary requirements – including halal meals upon request. Catering to individual needs is possible due to our small class sizes.
In addition, we bake cupcakes for children’s birthdays, which are enjoyed during a birthday ring – children decorate their own cupcake and then enjoy them together. Parents may also order party packs at an additional cost, as we prefer that snacks are not packed from home. By having our school prepare snacks, we can ensure that dietary requirements and health or allergy concerns are accommodated without fear of ingredients causing adverse reactions.
Indoor and outdoor play areas
Children learn by interacting with the world around them. As a Curro School, our classrooms themselves are considered to be inanimate teachers of sorts. They are designed to allow maximum room for play and movement while being stimulating on a visual and tactile level. Our play areas are set up to encourage wonder and curiosity to foster child-directed play which is facilitated by a teacher. An additional indoor play area allows a change in play space on days that the weather doesn’t allow outdoor play.
Our outdoor play areas are seen as an extension of the indoor learning environment. Where possible, we incorporate natural, sensory-rich elements. Play areas include jungle gyms and spaces that support free play and curiosity. These areas are designed to encourage physical play, and generally have synthetic grass to prevent allergic reactions. Children are taken outside to play on days with moderate weather conditions to prevent excessive cold or sunburn. Additional safety measures are taken on sunny days.
