Emergency services help learners learn the survival skills
08 November 2021Following several reports of suicide attempts and cases reported to Lenmed Zamokuhle Private Hospital recently, local emergency medical services embarked on a journey to partner with the hospitals and help children in the area.
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), the hospital, and Carewell Ambulances visited the Curro Clayville Primary School to educate learners on issues of mental health and to teach them life-saving skills.
Learners gathered in the school hall where officials from the hospital talked to learners about mental health; the ambulance company educated learners on the importance of knowing how to perform lifesaving procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to activate emergency medical services and get a quick response, while the fire department educated learners on the dangers of playing with fire.
Carewell Ambulances' paramedics teach learners how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a safe way in case someone close to them is experiencing health problems.
Nobuhle Linda, stakeholder relations manager at Lenmed Zamokuhle Private Hospital, said that the visit on October 22 coincided with Trauma and Annual Emergency Medical Services Day which is celebrated on October 14.
She added that they decided to visit Curro Clayville because it was near their facility.
In doing that, they were not only helping the learners, but giving them skills and information they would take back home, and into their communities.
Spokesperson of Carewell Ambulances Thabi Langa said that the reason for their involvement was to educate the learners on how to perform CPR and other live-saving procedures. “Due to various illnesses or bodily harm one can encounter, these might cause heart failure and loss of breath.
“CPR procedures help to keep one oxygenated and their blood flowing and heart rhythm restored while waiting for professional help.”
Langa said that was why the event was part of their annual initiatives where the company celebrated Annual Emergency Medical Services Day in different schools.
