Curro Swimming Academy (CSA) were crowned the Mpumalanga champions for 2021

Lowvelders dominated the awards at the prize-giving of the Mpumalanga Open Swimming Championships.

The event was held at Van Riebeeck Park last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Curro Swimming Academy (CSA) were crowned the Mpumalanga champions for 2021.

Sixteen records were broken during the three days of competition.

Eighteen clubs from the Lowveld and some as far afield as Piet Retief, eMalahleni and Maputo competed.

But it was the Ehlanzeni swimmers who dominated the awards, winning all the best swimmer trophies and three of the four ludorum trophies.

Miela Banza of Uniswim won the best junior female and junior victrix ludorum trophies. She swam her way to six individual gold medals.

She won the girls’ 14 and under 200m breaststroke in 2;55.70. In the girls’ 12 division she also sparkled in the pool. She won the 100m breaststroke in 1;23.06.

The gold in the 100m freestyle also belonged to Miela, clocking a time of 1;11.08. She stopped the clock on 37.84 to win the 50m breaststroke.

In the 100m backstroke Miela took gold in 1;24.47. She dominated the 200m individual medley, wining in 2;51.21.

Henning Radley of Nelspruit Swimming Academy Development was the senior victor ludorum. He won six gold medals and broke two championship records.

He won a gold medal in the boys’ 13 100m butterfly, clocking 1;12.56. Henning also claimed gold in the 50m backstroke in 31.11.

In the 200m individual medley, Henning added to his gold medal tally, winning in 2;39.89. He won the 50m freestyle in 27.00, a new meeting record.

He set another record, in the 100m freestyle, clocking 58.59. Henning also won gold in the 50m butterfly in 30.00.

Jodi Dos Santos of Uniswim took home six gold medals from the championships. She was the best senior female trophy winner.

She stopped the clock at a record time of 1:08.58 to win the women’s 15 100m freestyle. Jodi claimed another gold in the 50m freestyle in 29.04.

In the 100m freestyle she won in a time of 1;02.59 and claimed gold in the 50m butterfly in 30.34. In the 100m backstroke she recorded a gold-medal winning time of 1;15.50.

A time of 2;22.17 gave Jodi gold in the 15-16 200m freestyle.

The combined team scores competition was won by CSA with 4 267.5 points. Uniswim were second on 4 159 and Clube Desportos Tubaroes Maputo third on 1 639.5 points

• Senior girl: Brooklyn Croxon, Uniswim – 100m breaststroke (1;16.35).
• Senior boy: Neil Burger, CSA – 50m butterfly (28.09, record)

Best disabled swimmer
• Junior male: Nhlakanipho Musawenkosi, KWA.
• Senior female: Nosipho Mathebula, ESS.
• Senior male: Sabelo Masango, KWA.

Best visiting club
• CDTM Mozambique

Best visiting male
• Max Frontiera, Cudas.

Best visiting female
• Angela Chicumbe, Cudas
