Curro Durbanville welcomes international chess coach

Curro Durbanville, a school managed by JSE-listed independent education provider Curro Holdings, is proud to announce the appointment of Reuben Salimu, the school’s first international chess coach.

With over a decade of experience as a trainer, coach and teacher, Salimu is also the founder and director of The African Chess Lounge. It is a community-based club that promotes chess in Africa. Salimu is a FIDE Instructor and Arena International Master. Both titles are awarded by the international governing body. Salimu has always been passionate about chess. “Being able to play and understand the game is an incredible Life Skill. No one can take it away from you. I believe that chess encompasses business principles, life tools and observes both Mathematics and Science in its purest form,” says Salimo.

According to Dirk van Zyl, executive head at Curro Durbanville, the school has always been proud of its high-performing players. “As one of the oldest and most popular board games in the world, we value the sport of chess tremendously. We are excited to welcome Coach Salimo to our team. Coach Salimo is an amazing player and coach. He brings plenty of experience to his new role as the coach of some of the Western Cape’s best players,” he says.

Chess is Salimu’s life calling. He respects the responsibility to preserve and lift the reputation of chess at Curro Durbanville. “We have some serious talent under our wing. We look forward to seeing how Coach Salimo will help raise the competitive standard of our players to an even higher level,” concludes van Zyl.
