Foundation phase sports
Foundation phase: Grades 1 to 3
Participation in sport and the role of physical development are based on the ethos of Curro Langebaan. This is to ensure that all learners are educated in totality and to create opportunities as far as possible for each learner to develop as an individual. It is therefore important that learners are encouraged to participate in sport. Participation in sport is not compulsory, but we encourage all learners to participate in at least one winter sport and one summer sport.
Every learner at Curro Langebaan has an opportunity to find their niche within the different sports activities that are presented by the school and the area. At our campus we make a definite attempt to provide the opportunity to develop a balanced individual.
Athletics is very popular on the West Coast. Learners from this area do extremely well in competitions in this district. Curro Langebaan’s athletes are a force to be reckoned with and are adding value to this proud culture on the West Coast. Each Curro athlete receives the necessary training and the opportunity to move through the ranks to the Boland structures, where they can achieve the highest level in their age group. Curro Langebaan annually delivers its quota of Boland as well as Western Cape athletes who participate in the South African Championships.
Our annual interhouse athletics meeting is one of the highlights of the year and is known for its enthusiastic athletes. The top athletes compete against each other for the sought-after junior and senior victor ludorum, as well as the junior and senior victrix ludorum trophies.
Besides the interhouse athletics meeting, the school’s athletics team gets ample opportunities to participate in various invitation athletics meetings. Curro Langebaan is also part of the independent schools’ interschool athletics meeting that takes place annually – here we strive to exhibit our proud athletics achievements.
The school can boast the necessary facilities to accommodate all the teams that the league offers us. We are enrolled in the local West Coast league and we are more than competent. Training focuses on the total cricket player and each individual player has the opportunity to move through the ranks of the Boland structures to compete at the highest level in his age group. Curro Langebaan has already produced a number of players for the West Boland team.
Curro Langebaan now has a swimming pool on its premises! Grade R learners receive swimming coaching and are taught basic techniques. A highlight on our swimming calendar is the annual swimming gala, where the junior and senior victor ludorum, as well as the junior and senior victrix ludorum, are chosen.
After this event has taken place, a school swimming team is selected to participate in invitation galas. Curro Langebaan swimmers all have the opportunity to move through the ranks of the Boland structures to proceed to the highest level in their age group. Curro Langebaan has already produced several swimmers for the Boland team.
Curro Langebaan currently has three outdoor tennis courts as well as one indoor court where different groups are coached. Primary school boys’ and girls’ teams, as well as high school boys’ and girls’ teams, participate in the West Boland league.
Private coaching is also available to the players and takes place after hours on the school’s tennis courts. Each individual player also has the opportunity to move through the ranks of the Boland structures to proceed to the highest level in their age group.
Curro Langebaan is a school that can boast teams in all age groups, regardless of the limited number of boys in the school. This is something that we are truly proud of and we strive to expand and build on our success through the dedication of players and coaches.
More than ample opportunity is provided for teams in the local league, tournaments and tours in order for players to develop as individuals and to further their talents. Each individual player also has the opportunity to move through the ranks of the Boland structures to proceed to the highest level in their age group.
Curro Langebaan currently has three outdoor netball courts as well as one indoor court. Curro Langebaan boasts netball teams in all age groups and teams play in the local league. Coaches and referees are well qualified. Special netball clinics are held on a regular basis and this provides the opportunity for players to develop their skills. Our netball teams participate in various sports days hosted by schools from outside our region.
The indoors netball court creates more opportunities for our players and we believe that this facility will promote this sport in our area.
Hockey is very popular with both boys and girls.
Although there is strong competition from other winter sports, Curro Langebaan’s primary school sports timetable makes provision for boys and girls to participate in two winter sports (hockey and rugby as well as hockey and netball).
Opportunities regarding league responsibilities are limited and therefore players have to travel long distances for league fixtures. The school has committed itself to creating opportunities for players to develop their talents as far as possible. Our players are invited to tournaments regularly.
A proud addition is the indoor hockey field that provides more opportunities for players to develop and show off their skills. We believe that this facility will be of great benefit to the development of hockey on the West Coast. Individual players also have the opportunity to move through the ranks of the Boland structures to achieve the highest level in their age group.
Junior and senior chess groups practice weekly and learners are provided with the opportunity to compete in tournaments in the area. Individual players also have the opportunity to move through the ranks of the Boland structures to achieve the highest level in their age group. Curro Langebaan is proud of those players who have represented the school at Boland level.
