Welcome to

Curro Castle Hermanus

Curro Castle Hermanus is an independent school in Hermanus, Western Cape that provides high-quality early childhood development in English and Afrikaans for children from 4 months to 5 years with a focus on the ELDAs. Our small class sizes based on age allow for our dedicated teachers to engage with each child in our internally developed play-based curriculum and build strong, caring relationships with each child.

Our school is on the same campus as Curro Hermanus’s primary and high school, which allows children to easily progress from nursery school to primary school and beyond in a familiar environment. Our building is separate from the primary and high school buildings to improve access control and ensure the children’s safety on the playground.

What do we offer?

At Curro Castle Hermanus, we have created a safe, nurturing centre of learning. Our carefully designed classrooms and playgrounds encourage children to explore a wide variety of experiences through play and developmental activities, aimed at developing a curious mind and creative thinking.

Children can be dropped off early in the morning (from 07:15) and can attend aftercare until 17:30 to accommodate working parents. We remain open during school holidays and provide a fun and exciting holiday programme. Curro Hermanus learners may attend the aftercare or holiday care on a day-to-day basis.

We focus on the ELDAs

The Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs) focus on aspects such as gross motor development, social awareness, communication, spatial awareness and arts. Learners also benefit from activities built around large soft bricks that form the important early foundations for Robotics studies, which is taught later in their school career.

Our classes are divided by age group, and each teacher has one assistant, depending on the number of children in the class. Furthermore, our programme incorporates the latest research in physical and cognitive development, such as encouraging loose-parts play that boosts creativity and curiosity, above playing with single-purpose toys.

Which activities do we offer?

We believe that participation in extramural activities plays an important role in promoting friendship and self-confidence in addition to physical and social well-being. Many of our activities are designed to help learners learn valuable skills. As Hermanus is by the ocean, we offer water-awareness classes for children from Group 4 onwards.

How do we ensure safety in our school?

Our strict security measures ensure the safety of our children. Access to the campus is restricted through biometric access. Visitors need to sign in to gain access and the number of visitors per class is limited and children are collected from the classroom. We also have a registered auxiliary nurse on-site who looks after the health of our children.
