At Curro Helderwyk, we pride ourselves on providing learners with a well-rounded education that stretches beyond the classroom. That’s why we offer a wide variety of sports and cultural activities that range from fun and recreational, to competitive and specialised (such as Curro Create). Several of these activities are included in our school fees, while others may be offered at an additional cost.
At Curro Helderwyk, we believe that sport plays an important role in promoting friendship, team-awareness and self-confidence in addition to physical well-being. Therefore, we offer a variety of sports activities. Activities such as chess further help to stimulate thinking patterns such as logical analysis and problem-solving, which help to improve skills and aptitude for subjects such as Mathematics. Sports activities are generally offered as part of our school fees, unless otherwise stated. Furthermore, while healthy competition is encouraged, the enjoyment of the game is not compromised.
Culture is one of the foundational pillars of developing a well-balanced learner and plays a fundamental role in building a sustainable and vibrant community. Our learners have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of cultural activities, regardless of their interests and abilities in sport or academics. Cultural activities are generally offered as part of our school fees, unless otherwise stated.
With a strong history of achievement in eisteddfods as well as carefully selected teachers and coaches, we go to great lengths to ensure that each learner is stimulated in their areas of interests. Furthermore, cultural activities expose learners to aspects of personal development that few other areas of learning could do – these include 21st-century skills such as presentation skills, proper thought articulation, and self-confidence.
As a Curro School, we offer two Curro Create programmes aimed at helping learners develop their creative talents to their full potential: Curro Arts Superhero (CAS) is an internal creative mentorship platform with a grading element, where learners are encouraged to discover, develop and display their inherent creative talents. Learners can also participate in the annual Curro Create National Youth Theatre Festival, wherein schools enter a one-act play in any genre and official language. The winning plays are chosen through a series of adjudications by world-class theatre-makers, who closely mentor learners throughout the process.
Extramural activities are offered by external tutors or coaches. They are offered at an additional cost and generally take place on the school’s premises. Some extramural activities are aimed at improving or supporting academic learning or mental and physical development, while others are purely recreational.
At Curro Helderwyk, we offer several value-added programmes to our learners, including an exchange programme with Botswana and USA, in-house therapists, a radio station run by learners, and a drone programme incorporated in STEAMD subjects.
