Baobab School is an independent Curro Select school situated in Gaborone, Botswana, that provides high-quality education for learners from Reception to Standard 7 in a 21st-century skills learning environment. We are committed to producing globally competitive citizens filled with compassion, commitment and integrity, by providing an innovative, inspiring education that will unlock the full potential of all stakeholders, in its inclusive and holistic environment. As a Curro Select school, our small class sizes, enhanced curriculum and dedicated teachers provide learners with skills and knowledge to grow into self-confident individuals, equipped to develop into leaders within their communities, all while maintaining affordable school fees.
Foundation and lower phase: Reception to Standard 3
At Baobab School, our foundation and lower-phase classes focus on an integrated play-based curriculum with specialised educational programmes. These include, but not limited to: the phonological awareness programme, which is explicitly taught in small groups and includes interactive games; the Letterland integrated literacy programme; and the New Heinemann Mathematics programme, which is a learner-centred approach in which problem solving is the starting point. Our lessons are based on the Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs) that promote skills such as communication, creativity and the ability to think critically in early learning. As part of our affordable school fees, we also offer an introduction to Robotics through Duplo Lego, as well as an introduction to coding and programming through the WeDo Lego programme. Teaching takes place in English, but Setswana and French are offered as subjects (from Standards 1 and 3 respectively).
Middle phase: Standard 4 and Standard 5
In these classes the focus shifts from perceptual development to exposure to relevant content, skills and knowledge, which are required for further learning. We offer a conducive learning environment with small class sizes, where the learners enjoy coming to school and acquire a love for learning that will sustain them throughout their school years. As a Curro Select school, we acknowledge the potential in each learner to reach their optimum ability. Therefore, we emphasise individual achievement rather than competitiveness, as well as activities that support confidence, creativity and collaboration. Through our enhanced curriculum, we create opportunities for personal growth in independence and responsibility, so that learners can take up the challenge of being personally responsible and accountable for their actions in the upper school phase.
Upper phase: Standard 6 and Standard 7
In this phase, the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thought and independent work. Application of skills and concepts is also a focus area in this phase. We promote creativity and critical thinking in small class sizes by encouraging learners to make their own choices within well-established boundaries. We also reinforce learning through Practical Science and agriculture-controlled experiments. We aim to embrace 21st-century skills by incorporating Computer Studies and Robotics into our enhanced curriculum. We further enhance learning through our remote learning systems, which use Century learning as well as MS Teams for research and assignments.
We follow the Botswana PSLE syllabus with a focus on 21st-century skills
In the upper school phase, we follow the Botswana PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination) syllabus, which guides the diverse international curriculum. Teaching takes place in English, but this curriculum includes Setswana and French as subject options.
