On the couch: Waterstone College’s 2021 head boy
Congratulations on being selected as a leader at your school. What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader? We as a school have been through and are currently going through a time in our history where we have all been forced apart by Covid-19 and kept apart physically for the majority of the year. I am looking forward to bringing the school together again, and even if we remain apart, we as a school should be united again. One family, one dream and one goal.
What are your strengths and weaknesses? My strengths are that I am a problem solver with a passion for my school, but my greatest strength is the exceptional team I am working with: Omolemo Matla (Deputy Head-Boy) Sian Vassanjee (Deputy Head-Girl) and Daniella Retief (Head-Girl) who will help me ensure that when my year graduates, we will have left a legacy that lives on long after we are gone. My biggest weakness is that when I set my heart on something, it becomes difficult to change my perspective. I also like to get tasks done quickly which is not always the best way.
Is there anything you would like to change at your school? I believe that we as a prefect body are not able to completely change the school, we are only a matric group for 8 months. We will be focusing on building continuity within the school structure and continuing to grow the developing culture within the school. I do think that as a school body we need to improve the communication between the students, staff and parents, this will ensure that everyone is on the same page and we as a school can move from a great school to an elite school.
What do you love the most about your school? I love the sport, it is why I chose Waterstone as a young student. We are a school that is 13 years old and we are already competing with the Titans of South Africa. I love the facilities, they are world class. The staff have shown time and time again that they are priceless to the students from Mrs. Bock and her staff to Sizwe and his ground staff. The school is also developing a culture of strength in unity and I am so exited to see it grow.
Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for? I am aiming to achieve the best results I can while maintaining balance in my life. This is my last year of high school, I want to make every second count. This is the last stretch of my schooling career and I am going push until the very last day.
What will you message of encouragement be for your prefects/co-leaders? My message would have to be to surround yourself with those on the same mission as you, they will build with you rather than tearing you down.
Who is your role model? My role model is Didier Drogba an ex-professional football player from Ivory Coast. He played for Chelsea when I was young. To this day he has used his money and influence to build hospitals in his home country and even stopped a civil war. He put his people first and himself second.
What are your plans after matric in 2022? I have been given the opportunity by an athlete management company to study in the USA and play Football while I study. I would like to study Business Management and leadership and do my Master’s in behavioral economics. I get to live my dream of playing soccer and I can get an education while I play.
If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why? I would be Captain America as he was a good person for a long time before he was given his powers and he showed that you can be an average man and still be a hero. He showed that doing the right thing is more important than pleasing those around you.
On a regular Saturday, you will find me at…with… When I do not have a Football Match the next day, I am at my friend’s house with all the lads and ladies from our friends group.
