Curro Cup Mountain Bike. The first leg of the Curro Cup Mountain Bike Challenge took place on Saturday, 5 March 2021, at Curro Meridian Pinehurst.

The inter-school sports challenge was hosted by Cycle2Ride on behalf of Curro Sport. More than 35 learners battled it out to be crowned champion of the Western Cape.

Taking top spot for the Girls’ High School Junior category (17-19 years) was Cheyanne Luüs from Curro Hermanus. Luke Craig Kavanagh, from the same school, triumphed in the same category for the boys. For the primary schools, Diyani Kotze (Curro Durbanville) came first in the 15-minute Sub-Nipper race (7-8 years). For the boys, it was Nate Cammisa who came first, also from the same school.

Despite a valiant effort from learners from five different schools, including Curro Durbanville, Curro Brackenfell, Curro Century City, Meridian Pinehurst and Curro Hermanus – the greatest number of firsts went to Curro Durbanville.

 

Second year

Now in its second year, skipping 2021 due to the pandemic. The Curro Cup aims to identify the independent school group’s best sports stars and teams across 12 sporting codes. This includes athletics, rugby, netball, hockey and eSports, swimming, golf, and mountain biking.

“South Africa has always had a proud sporting heritage. Our wonderful natural landscape makes mountain biking especially attractive to those who enjoy adventure and physical challenge. The competition is another excellent opportunity for our learners to be elevated on a national level. There is no doubt that the dedication and passion of our riders add immeasurable value to their learning. Not only does it help to keep them fit and healthy, but sports like mountain biking also offer a platform to build mental strength and fosters healthy competition amongst peers,” says Curro Holdings CEO, Andries Greyling.

Two more Curro Cup Mountain Biking Challenges are scheduled in other provinces later this month. The winners of both these events will join those from the Western Cape leg. Each will be given a step-up in the competitive world of school sports, enhancing their abilities during and after school.
