Cultural activities offered:
Foundation phase: Grades 1 to 3
A kaleidoscope of opportunities for every learner to experience the heart of nurtured creative excellence under the guidance of skilled specialists in the fields of art, music, drama, choir, marimba and instrumental tuition.
Our vibrant and thriving Creative Arts Department offers an extensive programme within the daily curriculum. Learners are afforded the opportunity to attend arts festivals, eisteddfods and to participate in international music and drama examinations and school productions.
Our primary and high school have a music room, art room and drama room. Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy is fortunate to have a large school hall, a sports hall and access to the CityHill 4000-seater auditorium to host cultural activities. The learners have access to recorders, xylophones, violins and marimbas for the music classes.
Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy hosts the Highway Harmony Choir Evening (a collection of local senior primary school choirs), the Nearly Christmas Choir Evening (junior primary school choirs) and Festival in the Hills (our annual arts festival, in collaboration with Kloof Rotary Club).
The music rooms at Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy and Curro Hillcrest are a constant hub of vibrant activity! Music is offered throughout the curriculum from preschool to high school level. The focus of the music department is to instil a love, joy and understanding of music through hands-on experience, with class lessons incorporating practical and theoretical instrument tuition in percussion, recorder, violin, guitar, marimba as well as vocal.
The learners are allowed the opportunity to showcase their work at various school functions and assemblies throughout the year.
The music school continues to develop, and if sufficient interest is shown in additional instruments, a suitable tutor will be sought.
Learners are given the opportunity to enter eisteddfods and examinations through the internationally recognised Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, as well as Trinity College. Our learners continue to achieve impressive results through these organisations.
There is also a school colours awards programme in place for music students.
The drama department offers learners from Grade 1 through to Grade 7 an opportunity to explore the performing arts in a safe space. Drama skills and performance techniques, as well as dance, are covered during lessons, with a focus on self-expression and enjoyment.
Every year classes and individuals are entered in the Speech and Drama Festival, which allows the learners to showcase their talents to an adjudicator in various performance categories, and receive certificates of excellence.
During the third term every year, the annual school production is performed. The Grade 7s work together to put on a performance that displays their individual talents and group collaboration through acting, singing and dancing.
The drama department also auditions for a drama team every year, where interested learners in Grades 6 and 7 audition to be a part of an outreach team. This team then works on performance material that can be used as an outreach to our greater community.
All learners from Grade 3 to Grade 7 attend specialised art lessons in our art studio. Painting, printing, drawing, hammering, drilling, moulding, engraving, designing, experimenting, weaving and threading are some of our activities in the studio.
Learners in Grade 1 and 2 are invited to attend the art club as an extramural activity. We have two major art exhibitions a year. Our first one is during Crest Fest (our annual creative arts festival), where we exhibit art works from different schools. The second is our end-of-year exhibition – a celebration of all our learners’ works that they have done throughout the year.
Our art and culture department has their own blog where parents can see what exciting projects their children have been working on during the term.
