Primary school

Foundation phase: Grade 1 to Grade 3

In Grade 1 to Grade 3 we focus on teaching the basic skills, concepts and knowledge required for further learning. We offer a vibrant, invitational atmosphere where learners enjoy coming to school and where they acquire a love for learning that will sustain them throughout their school years. We also create opportunities for personal growth so that learners can become personally responsible and accountable for their actions in the intermediate phase.

The three main learning areas are language, mathematics and life skills that include language and motor skills development. Learners further benefit from specialised offerings such as music, and chess, and have Afrikaans and Sepedi as additional language option.

Intermediate phase: Grade 4 to Grade 6

In these grades, the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thought and independent work. We prepare learners for high school by teaching them how to apply the skills and concepts they have learned. We also promote creativity and critical thinking by encouraging children to make their own choices within well-established boundaries.

The use of tablets in the classrooms is encouraged as an additional learning tool, allowing for independent research and the downloading of additional notes and resources. This further helps to prepare learners for the ever-changing realities of university and the workplace of the future. Some of our specialised subjects include Technology and Natural Sciences, and learners benefit from choosing Afrikaans and Sepedi as additional language options.

At Woodhill College, we provide learners with leadership development opportunities to create an inherent notion of service-leadership. Learners in Grade 6 are provided with the necessary skills to fulfil their responsibilities as the leaders in the primary school, thereby developing their individual traits. All Grade 6 learners attend weekly development sessions and are particularly involved in the school’s outreach programmes during the year.
